The takarangi is a double-spiral pattern carrying much symbolism.

It commonly depicts the universe, its creation, its balance and ever-evolving state. 

'Taka' meaning rotation or swirling and 'Rangi' meaning sky or heavens.

It can also be used to depict the separation of Papatūānuku and Ranginui. 

It also symbolises the balance between light (te ao marama) and darkness (te po) or the seen and unseen aspects of life it's self (physcial and spiritual).
