This Taonga is based on a poupou form depicting Tama-te-kapua, the kaihautū/chief of the Te Arawa waka and in the Te Arawa style of carving.

Tamatekapua was one of the founding navigators and ancestors of Te Arawa iwi and the many hapu that descending from him, referred to as ngā pumanawa e waru or 'the 8 beating hearts.'

This Taonga is perfect for any descendant of Tamatekapua/Te Arawa or the many hapu that descend from him but could be worn and appreciated by any person who appreciates fine workmanship. 

This was designed by the artist and carver who is of Te Arawa (Ngati-Tarawhai, Ngati Hinemihi) himself and it has been one of the most favourite taonga to work with, from concept, design, processing and completion.

This Heru (hair comb) measures 20.3mm x 4mm, is double-sided and comes with a black adjustable cord so the taonga can also be worn as a necklace.
