Bone Carving #73 Mangōpare (Hammerhead Shark)

This is a contemporary mangōpare design with a parent and child depicted. The child or pēpī represents learning, growth and development. The adult is the mentor, the kaitiaki or tuakana in this depiction. 

The mangōpare in general terms represents determination, resilience, leadership and strength in diversity. They are known for being tough and have the ability to withstand difficulties in the water. Mangōpare are known as great navigators. 

In some iwi and hapu of Aotearoa, it is believed that mangōpare are taniwha or kaitiaki of people, waterways and sacred places. 

This taonga measures 11cm x 5cm, is double sided (beef bone) and has a black adjustable cord.
