Dolphins have always been culturally significant to Māori with stories dating back to the early navigators.
Tuhirangi, was said to guide Kupe to the lands of Aotearoa, Kaikai-a-waro the name of a highly revered dolphin in the canterbury region who guided ships through the cook straight and in the early to mid 2000's there was Moko.
Moko was a dolphin known to travel up and down our east cost interacting with locals. He was made internationally famous for successfully guiding two trapped pygmy sperm whales back to deep waters after being stuck on a sand bar around Mahia.
