This taonga draws inspiration from the legend of Maui Tikitiki-a-Taranga and his jawbone, gifted by his grandmother - she was called Murirangawhenua (according to Ngati Porou stories). This was the jawbone that was said to have acted like a fishhook and raised the North Island (Hei-matau-a-Maui).
This taonga can represent determination, navigation of life and circumstances, valuable ancestral knowledge, provision and wellbeing, protection, and strength.
It measures 10cm in length and 3.2cm in width, is double-sided, with a black adjustable draw-string.
